So before you begin massaging the shoulders with deep tissue you're always going to want to make sure that the tissue is properly prepared. So I've already given Gina a nice Swedish massage to get her tissue nice and relaxed. But now we're going to go and move right in to some of the deeper techniques.
During the massage session, the therapist uses his or her hands, elbows, fingertips, knuckles or forearms to stimulate the muscles and reduce adhesions. The slower pace of this type of massage means that every muscle receives the optimal level of care. Guests may be asked to breathe deeply throughout the session, especially when tense areas are being targeted. Deep breathing supplies the muscles with plenty of oxygen and can ease discomfort.
So one of the things that you can do is go ahead. You can actually brace her shoulder underneath your hand, and you're going to slide your thumb right underneath that scapula. If you have a little bit more problem getting under there, you can go ahead and put her hand on her back. Again, you slip your hand under there. Let the shoulder just relax in your hand. Let the elbow relax right there on your arm.
I'm getting that scapula pulled up even more with this then before. So the scapula is actually supposed to be somewhat of a free moving bone. So don't be shy. You've actually got scar tissue and fascia and all kinds of things under there that are holding that scapula down that aren't necessarily supposed to be there. Just check in with your client and make sure it's not painful. When you place the arm back down, do so gently. There are a couple of other techniques.
One thing is hand over hand here. This gives you a little more strength. I'm going to use a lot of my core strength here. I'm not using a lot of my fingers, and I'm just going to gently pull right along the trapezius. And you can actually do this stroke all the way down the shoulder, and it just feels really, really good.

And then I like to end by just doing some nice squeezes all through here. Some petrissage, which sort of looks like kneading of dough. And that is a shoulder massage.
